Preventing "Ipad Neck"

By: Dr. Donna A. Pontoriero, Chiropractor

The human neck is composed of 7 bones. These bones are coupled together by delicate joints. Injury to the neck can result in one or more of the neck joints locking out of position. This causes pressure on the delicate nerves that are situated close by these joints. The result is pain!

Pain spreading to your shoulders and arms is one of the most common types of neck pain and is usually caused by pressure on the joints and nerves at the bottom of the neck. Here are some tips to avoid neck and shoulder pain while using a tablet computer:

  • Sit in a chair with back support.
  • Use a posture reminder device. Also known as "posture trainers" or "posture coaches," these small, wearable devices adhere directly to the skin or clip on to clothing and beep to let you know when you're slouching.
  • Take a stand. Place your Ipad on a stand (rather than a flat surface) and attach a keyboard in order to achieve a more upright posture when using your tablet.
  • Exercise to strenghten neck and shoulder muscles. This is particularly important for women who experience neck and shoulder pain.

If the pain persists, you should consider chiropractic care. A chiropractor will conduct a thorough examination. These tests may involve your ability to turn and bend. Muscle tone of the supporting muscles in the neck may be tested. Diagnostic imaging to reveal the underlying structure of the spine may be requested. These and other tests are designed to identify the cause and location of your neck pain.
